In the past 8-10 years, we have watched many social media outlets come and go. MySpace has sought revival, but with little success as millions of bands and fans are unwilling to recommit to a resource that crashed amidst a social media movement across the country.
In 2008 I was introduced to Twitter, thanks to an internship program that trusted a 20 year old with a Twitter account that had over 1 million followers. As more and more people have adopted Twitter, it has become a haven for celebrity interaction, social awareness, and brand-oriented conversation. Our company is seeing a large growth of interaction on Twitter in comparison to Facebook, most people uncertain of how that could be, as it seems the entire world is using Facebook daily. Here’s just a few reasons why I choose Twitter over the others.
Shortened Messages: Our brains are being intoxicated with messages throughout every minute of every day. That’s why brands need to keep their message short and sweet. We live in a world of micro-blogging; someone taking the time to read an entire blog post or news article can seem impossible at times.
Focused Content: A typical Facebook feed will often include photos of babies, a rant about a bad driver experience amidst traffic, a strong dislike for a political stance, and a cry-out for someone to realize that a friend has been working out harder than ever before. Filtering through the clutter is overwhelming and requires a boat load of scrolling. With Twitter, your friend and community will rarely “expect” you to be following them. If they aren’t posting content you care about, stay away and let them keep updated on you.
Visually-Friendly: For the visual-minded folks, Twitter enables the use of photo-sharing from Instagram as well as the rising Vine app for short videos. It also hosts a decently-designed mainframe and app program, which keeps many people away from the cluster of madness we called Reddit.
Opportunity-Loaded
Genuinely Connected: If you think that Celine Dion is writing all of the updates on her Facebook Fan Page, it’s time to go back to technology school. Thankfully, Twitter has managed to use a verified content process to determine what accounts are faux and where to expect real content from real people. Trying to tell Michael Jordan how much you love him? He’s not on Twitter yet, but send your love over to Shaq and you may just get a response.
