Making plugs on a blog.. is that ethically allowed? Ethics aside, here I am doing it.

About GOOD Magazine

Let the secret be known—most magazines do not make money on subscriptions or newsstand sales. In fact, they spend a ton of money just to get people to buy copies or subscribe. So we came up with the idea of giving away all subscription fees and allowing subscribers to choose which organization they would like to support. In other words, we’re putting our money where our mouth is and empowering those who are driving change in the world.

This whole thing is an experiment. The success of our campaign will allow us to meet a self-selecting group of quality subscribers who find us through word of mouth, internet links, media coverage, mailings, our partner organizations, or the other crazy schemes we like to come up with, and raise significant money for organizations that will do something important with it.

Our goal for our second year is to create another six amazing issues of GOOD, to achieve 50,000 subscribers, and to contribute $1 million to our nonprofit partners.

If you like what we’re doing, please help us make it happen. Choose GOOD. Thank you.

So there it is. Someone out there decided that they were over the stereotypical business roles and money-saavy politics that come with it. Or maybe I have fallen as a victim to their sales pitch. Maybe, they are in fact taking a favorable cut of money from the advertising they do in their mag and its just a trendy public relations scheme to raise awareness and build a subscription base from a generation seeking to make a difference and be involved in such organizations.

How do we know when something like this is genuinely what it markets? At what point does a Christian give their support to such a cause? I have immediately drawn close attention to this magazine, but it is my personal responsibility to understand what I am committing to and if the decision truly represents that which Christ would do.

It’s crazy what sort of things go through one’s mind when they take a minute to realize the depths of every situation.

    That sounds super interesting.

It’s definitely a creative business model and it sounds… ah… “good” haha.

But I did a bit of searching and it was hard enough to find the actually registered name of the company (“GOOD Magazine LLC” in case you wanted to know). It brings me pause that, so far as I could find, there were no financial statements available online. And I also wonder the same thing you do, whether or not its just a clever model to bring in business from a particular market (ie. me).

If nothing else, two things… 1. They’re definitely making (or will be making) a pretty penny. Or at least they (will) have the opportunity to (ads, etc).. and, 2., it’s a why-haven’t-i-thought-of-that kind of idea. Which is sweet.

Just my thoughts; not too much time went into forming them, so take it for what it is. 🙂 Peace.
