Nike, amongst many other popular brands, is not an official sponsor in this years’ Olympic Games in London. However, they’ve definitely taken advantage of the opportunity to captivate a global audience, especially young people looking to follow their own Olympic dreams. But rather than an emphasis on the 1% of athletes that actually make it to the Olympics, I’ve come to notice a call-to-action to the greater population. These inclusive commercials are sure to inspire many hearts.
The most recognizable commercial has come through the “Find Your Greatness” campaign with Nike, which kicked off just before the launch of the Olympics. The Buckeye Nation embraced Nathan Sorrell, a 12-year old student from London, Ohio that was featured running in one of the #FindYourGreatness shorts. The spot, which has aired several times and caught viral attention as a result, features the 200-lb child running on an empty country street in what appears to be a lackluster performance when paralleled to the 100 meter dash. But beneath the surface, the heart of the audience is tugged as you watch a young man looking for his greatness.
It must also be noted that since the commercial has aired, Nathan and his family have challenged one another to lose weight and get in shape, far exceeding what I would assume would be his expectations when he took the casting call. Here’s a look at the #FindYourGreatness teaser.
I also adore this Jordan Brand commercial, aimed at an international rivalry connecting the two largest basketball markets in the world: the USA and China. Advertisements in the form of storytelling has a special place in my heart.
How will you find greatness?
